Trendlines Agtech Q2 2013 Update

Did you know that the average life expectancy for a child born this year in Israel is 100 years? This means the world’s already stretched resources are going to have to support a lot more people for a lot longer. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, “by 2025, 1.8 billion people will be living in countries or regions with absolute water scarcity, and two-thirds of the world’s population could be living under water stressed conditions.” The UN’s World Water Assessment Program points out that “water resource management impacts almost all aspects of the economy, in particular, health and food production and security.” Israel offers abundant agricultural know-how, including water management innovations that can be adopted to meet the challenge of world food security in the future:

  • Modern drip irrigation allows a small country with 60% desert area to still grow food
  • Cows in Israel eat less grain and produce more milk
  • Trees can “tell” you when they need water — a Mofet portfolio company innovation
  • More fish can be bred with less land and water — a Mofet portfolio company innovation

Above and beyond our work with the companies in the incubator, Trendlines and Mofet have additionally taken up the challenge of creating an agritech “ecosystem.” This connects entrepreneurs, investors, and industry professionals to disseminate Israel’s knowledge in this field and leverage the technologies to provide food security for a growing population in the coming decades. How are we doing this?

  1. Organizing agritech road shows
  2. Participating in international agritech events
  3. Organizing the annual Agrivest event, a unique tour and conference focused on Israeli cutting-edge agricultural technologies

Congratulations to Sol Chip: Best Start-Up Award
Sol Chip (together with ApiFix, another Trendlines portfolio company) was named Best Start-Up Company of the year by Israel’s Office of the Chief Scientist at the annual awards ceremony in Tel Aviv on June 26. Sol Chip has developed a cost-effective, compact solar battery technology that integrates solar energy sources with low power electronic devices. Sol Chip’s patent-protected technology eliminates the need for a solar panel area and its miniaturized solution provides perpetual power for wireless sensor and mobile electronics.
