Mother Earth: The Seeds of Start-Up

globes-hebrewWhen talking about an agricultural greenhouse, the picture that comes to mind is a huge canvas spread over bananas, tomatoes, and the like. But Trendlines Agtech, the agritech-focused technology incubator, is making its way into the hearts of farmers and pockets of investors. We went for a visit.

Cobi Levanon and Igal Magen don’t look like your typical start-up entrepreneurs. Sunburned, and with a face lined with experience, Levanon has 20 years of fish farming experience behind him; in the past, Magen managed Israel’s aquaculture sector. They “define themselves first of all as ‘fish growers’ — farmers who have been involved in the ‘troubles’ and ‘commitment’ involved in raising fish,'” says Levanon. Magen emphasizes the point: “When the damn generator breaks down, it’s always Friday at two in the morning.” His partner exhorts: “It’s Alcatraz here.”
