Spotlight On: Safer Epidural Procedures

Omeq Medical, founded by Lior Margalit and Oded Tsamir in April 2013, is developing a sensor-based epidural placement system for safe, accurate epidural injections. Their system will give automatic acoustic and visual signals to indicate correct needle placement. Omeq will present their technology at our upcoming investment event on January 28th.

How did the idea for your company develop?

Some of our friends and family members suffered epidural-related complications. As biomedical engineers — we met at university –we investigated the clinical problem and found a solution that we thought could work. After running our idea by anesthetists and receiving positive feedback, we built a prototype and set about testing it in the lab.

Why do you personally care about your company’s product?

We believe that the clinical problem really exists and is not optimally dealt with. For us, it is unacceptable that in 2013, doctors insert a needle into the body very close to the spinal canal, without any guidance and dependent only on their skill and intuition.  Therefore, both physicians and patients stand to benefit from the device. Building a new Israeli company is an exciting prospect and one of our primary motivators.

Why should others care about the solution you are developing?

Our solution increases the success rate and lowers the complications of epidural procedures. This will make the procedure much safer. In the future, our device will document the procedure electronically, providing data to hospitals, physicians and insurance companies. We are designing our solution to integrate with the current epidural kit on the market. This will make it easier for physicians and hospitals to adopt our product.

What advice do you have for a new entrepreneur with a great idea?

Don’t be afraid to share your information with people in the field to get feedback, but don’t forget to LISTEN. You will be amazed at the willingness of friends and colleagues to help you.

As you know, the Trendlines’ mission is “creating companies that improve the human condition”. How is your company doing this?

Pain is one of the most common reasons for physician consultation in the US and chronic pain significantly interferes with a person’s quality of life. Americans spend at least $50 billion each year on back pain—and that’s just the more easily identifiable costs. The epidural anesthetic is the gold standard in postoperative pain management and has a positive effect on patient recovery. If a woman decides to, then an epidural for pain management during birth can make giving birth much more comfortable and epidurals are widely used.

The epidural procedure is a great way to “manage” pain. Our aim is to make the procedure much safer.
