Spotlight On: Improved Closure Solution for Abdominal Incisions

Gordian Surgical, founded in 2012, is developing a novel, two-in-one trocar with a built-in closure device that offers physicians a simple, safe, and cost-saving approach for opening and suturing abdominal incisions. Zvi Peer, CEO of Gordian Surgical, will present the company at our investment event on January 28, 2014. We asked Zvi what makes Gordian Surgical interesting to the medical device market and a company worth investment.

How did the idea for your company develop?

The founder of the company was an American medical intern with an engineering background. Seeing the difficulties of fascia closure in laparoscopic surgeries up close, he embarked on finding a better solution. After checking the IP issues, he wrote up a patent and then decided to establish Gordian Surgical to develop and commercialize his invention.

Why do you personally care about your company’s product?

Gordian knot

Disentangling an “impossible” knot is a metaphor for thinking out of the box to find a solution.

The product presents a simple, easy-to-use solution to a well-known problem experienced in laparoscopic surgeries and functions as a real out-of-the-box solution, just like the Gordian knot, after which it is named.

Why should others care about the solution you are developing?

There are an estimated 4.4 million laparoscopic procedures performed annually in the United States. One of the most difficult and time-consuming tasks associated with laparoscopic surgery is closing the numerous abdominal access ports (openings). Gordian’s innovation will improve and simplify these procedures by making them safer, simpler and more cost-effective.

What advice do you have for a new entrepreneur with a great idea?

Check your idea carefully and discuss it with potential users, specialists and customers. Make sure your IP is defendable and then move forward. Undoubtedly, you will face difficulties, but if your idea is great and you persist, you can succeed.

As you know, the Trendlines mission is “creating companies that improve the human condition”. How is your company doing this?

For the patient’s quality of life, laparoscopic surgery is vastly preferable in comparison to open surgery. Our solution overcomes one of the challenges incumbent in laparoscopic surgeries – the issue of closing the internal abdominal wall. Making a procedure safer and more cost effective is good for patients, surgeons and hospitals.
