Spotlight On: A Coating Platform for Food Packaging

Valentis, founded in 2013, is developing a coating platform for food packaging and other applications. We interviewed Dovy Segev, CEO of Valentis, to find out what makes Valentis a company the food and agritech markets should be keeping their eyes on.

Dovy Segev (l), CEO and Sigal Meirovich (r), CTO of Valentis chat with an attendee at the Trendlines' Investment Event.

How did the idea for your company develop?

The patent for our platform technology was invented by Prof. Yossi Paltiel and Prof. Oded Shoseyov, both top researchers at The Hebrew University.  Although the initial idea was for agricultural uses, I envisioned a unique company with the ability to tailor a formula to fit customers’ needs. As a startup company, however, we had to focus; therefore our decision was to focus on high barrier food packaging.

Why should people care about the solution you are developing?

The use of flexible packaging is growing annually; one of the fastest segments is flexible food packaging. Valentis is focusing on high barrier food packaging that requires zero oxygen, humidity and UV penetration. The reason that our technology is so special and interesting is that it has the ability to reduce the amount of polymers, to improve the packaging capabilities allowing new functionalities and eliminate the use of aluminum foil.

What advice do you have for a new entrepreneur with a great idea?

Focus! However tempting it is to “run all over the field”, to succeed you need to take one step at a time and make sure that such a step improves your ability to run in the future.

As you know, the Trendlines mission is “creating companies that improve the human condition”. How is your company doing this?

Food security is one of the greatest concerns around the globe. The ability to keep food fresh for longer periods of time, to provide new food options in different areas of the world, to use fewer raw materials for packaging and improve the ability to recycle the packaging are all sought-after solutions which contribute to improving the human condition.
