Efficient production of materials from microalgae

The AlgaHealth Opportunity

Note: Fucoxanthin (few-co-zan-then) is a brown pigment that occurs in the chloroplasts of brown algae

With an innovative method for growing microalgae inland, AlgaHealth will produce commercial levels of premium quality fucoxanthin at a lower cost than currently available to address the large market demand — and opportunity — for quality additives.

The Product and Advantages

AlgaHealth is developing a new microalgal source for fucoxanthin and novel microalgae cultivation and processing protocols to produce large quantities of natural, high-quality fucoxanthin at about 1/5 of current costs. As a by-product, AlgaHealth will develop and produce polysaccharides, providing a second source of novel, high-value microalgal products.

AlgaHealth’s protocol will overcome current difficulties in producing microalgae by employing innovative microalgal physiological processes to maximize the quality and cost-efficiency of the production processes. Additional advantages of the algae and products —

  • Higher fucoxanthin concentration: 2% of dry weight, up to 1,000 times more than the raw material currently used in production
  • Higher levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), including omega-3 (EPA and DHA) and vitamins
    No contaminants
  • Faster growing cycles with greater productivity
  • Year-round growth potential

The Background and Market

Fucoxanthin and polysaccharides are materials found in macro- and microalgae. Today, the only source of fucoxanthin is marine macroalgae (seaweed). The low concentration levels of fucoxanthin in seaweed, combined with the limited supply, hinders fucoxanthin extraction at commercial levels.

These materials provide significant health benefits and are used in cosmetics.

  • Fucoxanthin supplements are used to correct metabolic disorders (e.g., obesity, high blood glucose, insulin resistance) and to prevent cancer.
  • Polysaccharide applications include as antiviral agents, for strengthening the immune system, to reduce sugar/insulin levels, and as an antioxidant or anti-aging material in cosmetics.

The market for fucoxanthin was $600 million, with a CAGR of 6% (Global Fucoxanthin Market 2015 Industry Trend and Forecast 2020, QY Research 2015). Current prices for fucoxanthin range from $40 to $80 per gram (calculation for pure material).
